John Bartleson estate records
Scope and Contents
The John Bartleson estate records date from 1848 to 1858 and are arranged in a single series. The papers relate to the enslaved Bartleson African Americans and their legal disposition as property in the settlement of the estate. Biography of John Bartleson
Born on October 15, 1786, John Bartleson was a land owner during the first half of the 1800s, marrying Fannie Boggs on January 21, 1819 in Madison County, Kentucky. Bartleson, in company with John Bidwell, led the first overland wagon train in 1841 to California from Missouri.
At his death in October 1848 as a resident of Jackson County, Missouri, Bartleson held six enslaved African Americans named Charles, Clara, Thomas, Frances, Mary, and William.
